EU webshop for eco-labelled products

BRUSSELS – [03.11.09] In a bid to boost the sale of eco-labelled products, the European Commission is to launch a new ‘webshop’ for goods that carry recognised eco-labels such as the EU Eco-flower and other nationally recognised standards.
The new EC-backed webshop is set to launch at the beginning of 2010 and is designed to increase the sales figures of eco-labelled products through an electronic store and to enhance the awareness of environmentally friendly products.
“Many years of effort by the European Commission and other providers of ecolabels have shown great results – the markets for these products have become increasingly dynamic and the number of producers is rising steadily. Nevertheless, these high-quality products are less widely available through retailers or wholesalers and there is no single marketplace for them,” said the EC in a statement.
The EC also hopes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions related to transportation with optional carbon compensation and to facilitate the comparison with conventional products through performance indicators for raw material use and quantities of generated waste.
